For your visit

The Bergen-Belsen Memorial is dedicated to the memory of the victims of National Socialism at Bergen-Belsen. You can visit the historic camp grounds with its memorials and memorial signs. There is also a Documentation Centre with a permanent exhibition, library, bookshop and museum café.

Offers

The Bergen-Belsen Memorial offers extensive educational programmes, conducts research on individuals and enables the use of the Collection and the library. It also develops and lends out various travelling exhibitions and participates in various projects.

  • Overview
The history of Bergen-Belsen

Shortly after the beginning of the Second World War, the "Wehrmacht" (German armed forces) set up a camp for Belgian and French prisoners of war in barracks on the edge of the Bergen military training area and not far from the village of Belsen. The camp was enlarged and modified several times in the following years.

Answers to frequently asked questions:

  • You can download our visitor regulations as a PDF here.

  • It is not permitted to bring (e-)scooters, bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades or roller skates onto the memorial grounds, nor is it permitted to ride motorised vehicles there (with the exception of wheelchairs and walking aids). Please use the bicycle racks provided in the car park for your bicycles.

  • Backpacks, large bags and items of clothing can be stored in lockers near the toilets in the Documentation Centre. Please do not take backpacks or large bags into the exhibitions.

  • Dogs (with the exception of assistance dogs) are not permitted in the buildings, the cemetery or the historic camp grounds.

  • You will find toilets in the entrance area of the Documentation Centre and behind the administration building. Accessible toilets are available in the Documentation Centre building. There is also a changing table here.
