What we show in the permanent exhibition
You will learn about the history of the town from a variety of sources.
The exhibition covers the three topics of Prisoners of War camp, concentration camp and Displaced Persons camp (DP camp). This covers the period of existence of all the camps on site between 1940 and 1950. The three sections of the exhibition are presented independently of each other, so you can also visit them separately.
We describe the history of Bergen-Belsen with the help of numerous documents and objects, whose significance we explain and which we place in a broader context. This gives you the opportunity to draw your own conclusions about the events and the actions of those involved from the many sources.
We provide additional information such as biographies and descriptions of groups of prisoners in the exhibition's "in-depth stations". An important element of the exhibition are the excerpts from video interviews with survivors, which provide access to personal perceptions of the events. The only window in the exhibition is located at the head of the building as a point of connection to the former camp grounds, thus relating the presentation of the story to the historical site.
