The Bergen-Belsen Memorial is located in the southern Lüneburg Heath, around 25 kilometres from Celle. The memorial has the extensive historical camp grounds with several monuments, memorial signs and graves as well as a permanent exhibition, regular special exhibitions. The memorial also has a bookshop, a library and a museum café.

General information

Here you will find further information about your visit to the Bergen-Belsen Memorial.

  • We recommend that you allow at least 2.5 hours to visit the permanent exhibition and the extensive former camp grounds.

  • The supervisory staff of the memorial centre exercise domiciliary rights. They are entitled to ban visitors who express inhuman, racist or national socialist ideas through their behaviour, clothing or political symbols or who violate the dignity of the site or the house rules in any other way.

  • It is not permitted to bring (e)scooters, bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades or roller skates onto the memorial site or to use motorised vehicles (with the exception of wheelchairs and walking aids). Please use the bicycle racks provided in the car park for your bicycles.

  • Backpacks, large bags and items of clothing can be locked in lockers by the toilets in the Documentation Centre. Please do not take rucksacks and large bags into the exhibitions.

  • Dogs (with the exception of assistance dogs) may not be taken into the buildings or onto the cemetery and historic camp grounds.

  • The permanent exhibition is not suitable for people under the age of 14.

  • We recommend wearing appropriate clothing for the weather conditions and sturdy shoes when visiting the outdoor area. Please note that the former camp site is a cemetery.

  • Visiting the memorial and the exhibitions is free of charge. You are welcome to support the preservation of the memorial and the former camp grounds with a donation.

    The Bergen-Belsen Memorial charges a standardised participation fee of three euros (reduced rate two euros) per person for all guided tours and study days.

  • You will find toilets in the entrance area of the Documentation Centre and behind the administration building. Disabled toilets are available in the Documentation Centre building. There is also a baby changing table here.
