Theme of the exhibition
The German defeat in May 1945 ended the suffering of hundreds of thousands of surviving concentration camp prisoners, prisoners of war, forced labourers and prisoners of the Secrect state police, Gestapo and justice system in what is now the state of Lower Saxony. They were liberated by the Allies. But what happened to them after Liberation?
Who was able to return home, who stayed in Germany, the country of the perpetrators? Who emigrated to third countries? How did Germans and liberated Nazi persecution meet? What role did the Allies play? How did the people in the countries of origin react to the return of the survivors?
