Children in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp

Exhibition "Children in the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp 2018 in the Forum of the Bergen-Belsen Memorial.

Around 3,500 children under the age of 15 were imprisoned in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. In the exhibition, the specific living conditions of these children are presented on the basis of individual fates.

Theme of the exhibition

The special exhibition "Children in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp" tells the story of the approximately 3,500 children under the age of 15 who were imprisoned in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The specific living conditions and behaviour of children in this camp are presented on the basis of individual fates. The topics range from family and play, roll-call and violence to fear, hunger, illness and death. Little-known aspects such as births in the concentration camp are also presented. The aid measures taken for child survivors after Liberation and biographies of child survivors form further chapters. One section of the exhibition is dedicated to the approximately 600 children who lost their lives in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

The exhibition takes a multi-perspective approach and is based on a broad spectrum of image and text sources, ranging from prisoner diaries, drawings and photos to memoirs and audio and film recordings made a few days after the Liberation. Previously unpublished excerpts from video interviews with child survivors of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp form an essential part of the exhibition, providing an insight into the specific ways in which they perceived and reacted to the living conditions in the concentration camp.
